Scrounger (Halfling, Rogue Archetype)

At one time or another, everyone finds themselves in sticky situations that require specific items that would enable them to survive their predicament. When faced with such dilemmas, nearly anyone would give their right arm and more to have what the need on hand. However, the odds of having exactly what they need at the time they need it is often beyond even the greatest chances of providence. Enter the scrounger. Scroungers are halflings that are naturally prone to acquiring what is needed by any means necessary-whether through bartering, pilfering, or salvaging that which has been left behind. While often accused of stealing (and rightfully so), scroungers primarily seek for what they need from street hagglers, abandoned wagon trains, even forgotten ruins. Class Features The scrounger has the following class features. Pocket Grab (Ex)

As a scrounger travels, she begins to acquire a variety of objects, most often through trade, purchase, or pilfering. As such, a scrounger rarely knows exactly what she has upon his person, with the exception of a few important items. As a standard action, a scrounger can pull out an item from a pocket or pouch at random. When doing so, she uses the Pocket Grab table below to determine the result. At 4th level, a scrounger may add or subtract her scrounger level to her roll to determine what object she grabs, if it is to her benefit. A result of 00 on the table must be rolled naturally. At 7th level, a scrounger can make a pocket grab as a swift action. This ability replaces trapfinding.

Quicker Than The Eye (Ex)

At 2nd level, a scrounger develops an amazingly swift and delicate touch. When she uses Sleight of Hand, creatures take a penalty on their Perception checks to notice the attempt equal to half the scrounger's class level. The scrounger also subtracts her class level from the normal –20 penalty when attempting to make a Sleight of Hand check as a move action instead of as astandard action. Lastly, the scrounger can withdraw an object hidden on her person, including a weapon, as a move action instead of the usualstandard action. This ability replaces evasion.

Rogue Talent

A scrounger can select the rogue’s Evasion class feature as a rogue talent. She must have the evasion class feature before selecting the Improved Evasion advanced talent, as normal. In addition, the scroungercna select the following new talents.

Conceal Items (Ex)

A scrounger can easily conceal weapons and small objects on her body. The scrounger adds her level on opposed Sleight of Hand checks (minimum +1) made to conceal a weapon or object. In addition, she can draw hidden weapons or objects as a move action, instead of as a standard action.

Expert Stealer (Ex)

When performing a steal combat maneuver, the scrounger does not provoke an attack of opportunity. In addition, she receives a +2 bonus on checks made to steal an item from a foe. The scrounger also receives a +2 bonus to your Combat Maneuver Defense when an opponent tries to steal an item from her.

Master Stealer (Ex)

The scrounger receives a +2 bonus on checks made to steal an item from a foe. This bonus stacks with the bonus granted by the expert steal talent. If the scrounger successfully steals an item from a foe during combat, the foe does not notice the theft until after combat is over or if it attempts to use the missing item. The scrounger must have the expert steal talent to select this talent.

Swift Grab (Ex)

The scrounger can use her pocket grab ability as a swift action.

Swift Appraise (Ex)

At 3rd level, a scrounger learns how to assess the value of items at the quickest glance. She can even make startlingly accurate guesses about particular items merely by observing the bulges they make in pouches, backpacks, or similar containers. She gains a +1 bonus on Appraise checks and an additional +1 bonus every three levels thereafter.

As a swift action, a scrounger can make an Appraise check in order to determine the relative value of each object carried by her target (DC = 10 + 1 for every object the scrounger is trying to ascertain the relative value of). Though she never learns the actual prices of items when using rummage, she does gain enough information to list these items in order, from the most valuable to the least valuable. She can, by taking a –20 penalty on the check, add to this assessment any items carried by her target that she cannot see.

This ability replaces trap sense.

Scrounger (Ex)

Starting at 4th level, a scrounger gains the knack to acquire what she needs. She can make a DC 15 Appraise skill check to locate any mundane weapon, piece of armor, or item of adventuring gear of 10 gp value or less in a Village size settlement. As the scrounger gains experience, the value of the equipment she can acquire increases. This value increases to 50 gp or less at 5th level, 100 gp or less at 8th level, 500 gp or less at 11th level, and 1000 gp or less at 14th level. Depending on the scrounger’s location when attempting to acquire a particular item, the DC of her Appraise skill check increases or decreases according to the settlement’s size as follows: Thorpe (–4), Hamlet (–2), Village (+0), Small Town (+2), Large Town (+4), Small City (+6), Large City (+8), Metropolis (+10). Additionally, the scrounger gains a +2 bonus to the check if she has ranks in the Knowledge (local) skill. The GM may rule that certain items are unavailable, regardless of the rarity of the item or location. This ability replaces the rogue talent gained at 4th level.

Combat Steal (Ex)

At 5th level, a scrounger can perform a single steal combat maneuver in place of one of her melee attacks. A scrounger must choose the melee attack with the highest base attack bonus to make the steal. This ability replaces sneak attack +3d6.

Master Scrounger (Ex)

Once per day, a scrounger of 8th level of higher can locate one mundane weapon, piece of armor, or item of adventuring gear of her choice, including those of masterwork quality, but must pay the listed value to obtain it. At 7th level, these items can be obtained for 75% of their listed value. This ability replaces the rogue talent gained at 8th level.

Master Purveyor (Ex)

Once per week, a scrounger of 12th level of higher can locate a seller of magic items, no matter what size of settlement she is in. She can locate one magic item of her choice with a value equal to 2,500 gp plus 250 gp per scrounger level. However, the specific item’s availability is still limited by the size of the community the scrounger is in, and must pay the listed value to obtain it. At 11th level, the magic item can be obtained for 75% of its listed value. This ability replaces the rogue talent gained at 12th level.

Improved Combat Steal (Ex)

At 11th level and higher, as a free action, a scrounger can make a Sleight of Hand check to lift an item from a target that is denied its Dexterity bonus to AC as part of a successful melee attack upon that target, without taking the standard –20 penalty for using the skill. This ability replaces sneak attack +6d6.

Greater Combat Steal (Ex)

At 16th level, a scrounger can use her improved combat steal ability even on targets that are not denied their Dexterity bonus to AC. In addition, targets that are denied their Dexterity bonus to AC are no longer permitted a Perception check to notice the scrounger lifting the item. This ability replaces sneak attack +9d6.
